112-1 Phonetics & Phonology I
This is the archiving website for the 'Phonetics and Phonology I' course, offered by the Department of English Language, Literature, and Linguistics at Providence University for the 112-1 academic year.
Goal (目標)
Taking a scientific approach to the study of language, emphasis in the first semester is placed on familiarity with acoustic phonetics (the physical properties of speech sounds), articulatory phonetics (the anatomical properties of speech sounds), and phonetic transcription.
Course Description (課程概述)
During the course, students must complete language practice assignments for each topic to enhance their understanding of the concepts learned. By the end of the course, students are expected to apply analytical skills to investigate and describe speech analysis.
There are two projects on acoustic phonetic analysis using the application Praat: one deals with the measurement of Voice Onset Time (VOT) and the identification of phonetic features among English consonants; the other involves measuring the first (F1) and second formants (F2) of vowels.
At the end of the course, students are required to create an e-Portfolio website using application such as Wix (https://www.wix.com) to document their learning. This website should include all tasks, assignments, and the teaching plan, demonstrating the knowledge acquired in class.

Grading Policy (成績評量)
-
Attendance & Participation
-
Exercises/Tasks/Review quizzes (Individual work)
Complete assigned exercises/tasks about phonetic transcription and phonological rules of English pronunciation, including tasks related to phonetic analysis done with the help of Praat.
-
Take-Home Assignments (Individual work)
Build basic concepts of phonetics and phonology
-
Two Projects (Team work)
1. Consonant Phonetic Analysis with Praat
Use the Praat software to conduct an analysis of aspiration, VOT, voiced vs. voiceless consonants, fricatives, and the distinction between liquids and rhotic vowels.
2. Acoustic Analysis of English Vowels with Praat
Analyze the acoustic properties of English vowels using the Praat software, focusing on the first two formant frequencies (F1 and F2).

An e-Portfolio website (Team work)
Create a portfolio website (WIX https://www.wix.com) to keep all tasks/assignments and the projects you have done in class.
